University of North Dakota business students, members of the local Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter, used momentum gained at the state level last spring to continue their success in competitions at the PBL National Leadership Conference over the summer.
UND’s PBL represented North Dakota well at the conference and took home six awards. Andrew Leizens received second place in Strategic Analysis & Decision Making and ninth place in Management Analysis & Decision Making; Kate Menzies received fourth place in Marketing Concepts and seventh place in Business Law; and Shelby Wood received sixth place in Business Communication and eighth place in Impromptu Speaking. This year’s National Leadership Conference took place June 22-25 in Anaheim, Calif.
At the conference, students competed against more than 2,000 participants in two of their top state events.
Through state-based competition at the PBL State Leadership Conference last spring, students in institutions across North Dakota competed in events testing their business knowledge and skills through written exams and presentations in an array of professional fields. Top state winners were then eligible to compete for honors at the National Leadership Conference this summer.
The 2013 State Leadership Conference was held in Devils Lake, N.D., at Lake Region State College. The upcoming state conference will be held at UND. The last time UND hosted the conference was in 2009.
UND students who attended the National Leadership Conference included Leizens, Grand Forks; Menzies, Cavalier, N.D.; Wood, Bismarck; Hannah Dohmeier, Cologne, Germany; Kaitlin Landman, Larimore, N.D.; and Emily Seelen, Buckman, Minn.
Throughout the national conference, students were able to take in the California sights such as Disneyland and Newport Beach. The conference marked the end of another great year of PBL.
PBL is one of the oldest and largest student business organizations in the world. UND’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda is part of the College of Business and Public Administration, but is open to all majors.
Phi Beta Lambda brings business and education together to promote personal and career growth. PBL gives students the opportunity to network with business professionals and students across the country, while expanding their leadership capabilities.
