UND Geography Offers Free Courses On Regions Of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota Geography Department will offer free courses for educators on North Dakota’s Kaleidoscope of Regions June 3-7.

The courses are intended for teachers and others in need of continuing education units (CEUs) and are offered through UND’s Professional Development for Educators (PDE) program.

The first course, worth 3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), is “North Dakota’s Kaleidoscope of Regions” which includes two field trips.  Tuition, housing, meals, and materials are free if enrolled through the PDE program.  It is based at UND and will be held Monday through Friday, June 3-7, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The following courses are also available with free tuition and materials but limited support for housing and meals if enrolled through UND PDE:

  • “The New National Geographic Society Standards and Mapping the World,” Monday and Tuesday, June 3 and 4, 7:45 am – 4:45 p.m. (1 CEU). Includes field trip with historical and GPS field stops.
  • “Bridging Human and Physical Geography,” Wednesday and Thursday, June 5 and 6, 7:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. (1 CEU).  Includes field trip to Devils Lake and Fort Totten.
  • “Experience Cultural Geography in North Dakota,” Monday and Wednesday evenings, June 3 and 5, 5-9 p.m. (1 CEU).  Will also use BlackBoard online for remaining time.
  • “Discovering North Dakota: 250 Years of Mapping,” Tuesday and Thursday evenings, June 4 and 6, 5-9 p.m..  This North Dakota State Historical Society exhibit is used to teach geography themes. Remaining time uses Blackboard Online.

The courses are sponsored by the Dakota Science Center, the UND Department of Geography, the Virginia George Inheritance Fund, and the North Dakota Geographic Alliance as the summer institute of the North Dakota Geographic Alliance for the three-credit program
