UND Wind Ensemble to present Spring “Bandancing” Concert, Monday, April 22

The University of North Dakota Wind Ensemble, under the direction of James Popejoy, will present a spring concert on Monday, April 22, at 8 p.m.

The performance will be held at the Chester Fritz Auditorium on the UND campus. Tickets are available at the door and are $6 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens or $12 per family.

The theme for this year’s spring concert is “Bandancing” as each selection is related in some way to various forms of dance. The program will open with Robert Russell Bennett’s classic Western One-Step from his Suite of Old American Dances. Next, the Wind Ensemble will present a new work composed by the Director of Bands at St. Olaf College, Timothy Mahr, entitled Scenes From a Life Danced. This performance will feature guest artist Emily Burkland presenting an original interpretive dance.

Other works on the program include The Washington Post of John Philip Sousa, a popular two-step dance selection from the late 1800s; Song of the Gandy Dancers by Richard Saucedo about Alabama railroad workers in the late 1940s; Sarabande, from the ballet “Soitaire” by Malcolm Arnold (also featuring dancer Emily Burkland); Wedding Dance by Jacques Press; and Jack Stamp’s Bandancing.

The concert also will include performances of Incantation and Dance by John Barnes Chance, with graduate conductor Tammy Mulske; and the premiere of a new work commissioned by the UND Wind Ensemble, Thomas Bough’s Concerto for Euphonium. Dr. Joel Pugh, instructor of low brass at UND, will be the featured guest soloist.

Selected by audition, the UND Wind Ensemble consists of the finest wind and percussion musicians from across the campus and includes students from many academic disciplines. The Ensemble recently presented a featured performance at the 2012 Western International Band Clinic in Seattle.
