UND’s 8th Annual BIG Event To Be Held April 27; Registration Deadline Is Friday

The annual BIG Event, where University of North Dakota students spread out across the community to complete odd jobs for free, is returning April 27.

The registration deadline to take part is Friday, April 5, when all forms from interested student participants need to be returned to the UND Student Involvement Office. Any interested student can download the form at http://www.und.edu/org/thebigevent/.

Participants will arrive at the UND Wellness Center at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 27, to check in, eat breakfast, get a free t-shirt, pick up any supplies needed and then head to various job sites around the community. Work at job sites will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The mission of the BIG Event at UND is to foster good will and common goals among the students, University of North Dakota, and the greater Grand Forks community through community service initiatives. The BIG Event started in 2005 and is the largest annual single-day community service event completed by UND students, faculty and staff in the greater Grand Forks area. Each year, The BIG Event has successfully grown, with more volunteers participating and more service jobs being completed.

In 2012, more than 1,200 volunteers completed more than 175 projects in the community.

No job is too big or too small for BIG Event volunteers. Volunteers serve at local churches, non-profits and elderly individuals’ homes in addition to many others.  Students rake, paint, pick up garbage, wash windows, work with nursing home residents, assist at YMCA youth events, ready local parks for summer and much more! This year will mark the 8th annual BIG Event, which is projected to be even bigger and better than the previous years.

The BIG Event started at Texas A&M University in 1982 when the Student Government Association Vice President Joe Nussbaum decided that he wanted to find a way to say “Thank You!” to the Bryan/College Station area for all they did for the University. Since then, through education and outreach efforts, The BIG Event has grown to be the largest single day student-run community service project in the country and has spread to over 70 participating universities.

UND joined Texas A&M and held its own inaugural BIG Event in the spring of 2005. This year is no different as the BIG Event strives to top the outstanding performance from the previous year as well as continue to build and sustain positive relationships between the University community and the Greater Grand Forks Community.
